The sound of her iron-tipped arrows hitting the wooden target comforted Isobel with every single one she shot. Far behind her the men trained vigorously as though their lives depended on it. It had been a month since Alasdair left for the court and Isobelâs anger grew as each second passed. He had gone with Gilbert and a few of his men, leaving Aidan and Angus behind to protect the castle in his absence. At first, Isobel had been enraged by his sudden, unannounced travel, but after the day of his expected arrival had passed she began to miss him.
She needed to be somewhere other than behind the imposing walls of Kilchurn Castle. She watched as the menâs training came to an end, and then walked up to Aidan to convince him to go on a hunt with her.
âAidan,â she said in greeting after approaching him.
âIsobelâ¦do you need anything?â he asked.
âYes, I was wondering if you would like to accompany me on a hunt. I would like to venture into the moors and forest just for a hunting game.â
âIâm afraid I cannot allow it dear Isobel. Alasdair gave strict warnings not to allow you out of the castle for any reason. Itâs not safe out there.â
âItâs just for an afternoon hunt. The weather is nice today and I would love to feel the wind of nature on my face,â she pleaded.
âIâm sorry Isobel, but I cannot allow it,â Aidan refused, although she could see in his clear blue eyes that he wished he could grant her desire but unfortunately, Alasdairâs word was final.
Isobel spent the rest of the day begging for his permission until he finally gave in, and she had a feeling Gwendolyn had something to do with it. As shocking as it was that Gwendolyn wanted to come along on their hunt, Isobel guessed she must have convinced Aidan because she felt bad for making Isobel cry with her remark the other night. However, as Isobel would eventually find out, Gwendolyn had other motives for wanting to go along on the hunt.
